Wooden Floor Sealing

How to seal a wooden floor

There are numerous ways to seal a freshly sanded wooden floor. The Professional Floor Sanding Company
recommends the following three:

  1. Part Polyurethane, Part Acrylic Seal
  2. Full Polyurethane Traffic Seal
  3. 100% Natural hard Wax Oil

For further information about the advantages, disadvantages and cure times of these seals please
see Finishes & Seals.

Hint: Never compromise on Seal quality. Always buy the best seal you can afford since poor quality seals
will cost more in frequent re-sanding costs.

The basic procedure for professionally sealing a sanded wooden floor (with any of the above methods)
is as follows:

  • Finish the floor to a minimum of 120 girt.
  • Clean the floor thoroughly with a good quality vacuum.
  • For polyurethane seals use either a short pile roller or a fine 3-4” brush to apply the seal.
  • For Hard Wax, apply with a stiff bristle brush.
  • Start in the furthest corner form your exit point and work gradually towards the exit.
  • Allow coats to dry before lightly rubbing down, re-cleaning and recoating.
  • Allow seals to cure fully before going exposing the floor to traffic.
  • See Finishes & Seals for details on coverage and cure times.

WARNING! Always work in a well ventilated room.

WARNING! Keep your working edge wet. Do not try and paint too much at one time since this
will let the working edge dry out and cause rippling.
